The Fort Donelson National Battlefield contains the fort whose capture was a major step for the Union, signifying its first major victory during the battles of the Civil War. After touring the exhibits of the visitor center, wander through the ruins of the fort and the battlefield, where from February 11th until February 16th, 1862 the battle raged and hundreds were killed while thousands were wounded. Also at the site is the Fort Donelson Cemetery, where hundreds of Union soldiers are buried, and the Dover Hotel, where the Confederate surrender took place at the end of the battle. The park is located in the northwest Tennessee town of Dover, on the west bank of the Cumberland River near Land of the Lakes National Recreation Area.
